June 2023 is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
This June 2023 is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. By the way, what is Prostate Cancer?
Prostate cancer is a cancer that occurs in the prostate gland, which is a small walnut-shaped gland in males that produces the seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. According to the National Cancer Institute, one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime.
There are many factors that can increase the risk of prostate cancer such as age, family history, race, and diet. However, there are also ways to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Some of these include eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, cutting down on fatty foods, having a regular exercise regimen, remaining physically active, maintaining a recommended weight, avoiding smoking and alcohol.
Symptoms of prostate cancer may include difficulty urinating, blood in urine or semen, pain in the hips, back or chest. If you are concerned about prostate cancer, it is important to talk to your doctor about your risk factors and whether you should be screened for prostate cancer.
Treatments for prostate cancer include chemotherapy, medications to stop hormone activity, radiation therapy, and surgery. These can be used alone or in combinations to treat cancer.
